Extract question — Phil's leadership

Question (20 marks + 4 AO4): Read the extract from Section Two where Phil instructs the group to frame the postman.

Explore how Kelly presents Phil as a leader in this extract and elsewhere in the play. Refer closely to the extract in your answer and relate your ideas to the contexts of the play.

Mark scheme (Level 6, 21–24 marks):

• AO1: Sustained, perceptive engagement with Phil's manipulative pragmatism — references his eating during crisis, his utilitarian calculus, his terminal silence.
• AO2: Analysis of imperative syntax ("You have to…"), the stage direction "Phil eats" as ironic counterpoint, fragmented dialogue showing Phil's command through brevity.
• AO3: Contextual links to Milgram (1961), Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil," and In-Yer-Face theatre (Sierz, 2001).
• AO4: Accurate spelling, punctuation, sophisticated vocabulary, formal register.
• Top-band response cites at least two embedded quotations, names a critic, and offers a personal evaluative judgement (e.g. Phil as a "moral vacuum dressed as competence").
