AO3 — Comparison

Question (10 marks): Compare how the two writers convey their attitudes to the city. In your answer, you should: compare their different attitudes; compare the methods they use; support your ideas with quotations from both texts.

Mark scheme (AO3):

• Band 4 (9–10): Perceptive comparison of ideas/perspectives and methods; integrated quotations from both texts; evaluative discourse markers ('whereas', 'conversely', 'both writers, albeit differently…').
• Band 3 (6–8): Clear comparison of ideas and methods with relevant support.
• Band 2 (3–5): Some comparison, often of content alone — methods underdeveloped.
• Band 1 (1–2): Simple cross-reference.
• Critical: answers that compare only ideas or only methods are capped at Band 2.
